Airport firefighters' job fears

Firefighters and security staff have started redundancy talks with Coventry Airport following Thomsonfly's decision to stop scheduled passenger flights.

Up to half of the 36 firefighters' jobs are thought to be at risk as a result of the airline's decision to re-focus its efforts on cargo flights.

Thomsonfly said 12 days ago it would stop scheduled flights from November.

The Unite union said: "People in security will also probably pay with their jobs for Thomsonfly's decision."

Speaking earlier this month, Thomsonfly managing director Chris Browne said: "With an increased focus on charter holiday flights, there is now a growing need for our aircraft on these routes and consequently our scheduled operations at Coventry Airport will regrettably terminate."

The airport recently lost a High Court appeal to build a terminal capable of handling more than 2m passengers.

A public inquiry found the terminal would have had an adverse impact on the environment.

Thomsonfly began operations at the airport in March 2004.
