Aksra Hoon Lakorn Lek
Promoted as a showcase of Thailand’s cultural and dramatic heritage, the newly-opened Aksra Theatre proudly presents exquisite performances of traditional Thai puppetry thereby helping to support and preserve this dying art form for future generations.

Presented under the name, Aksra Hoon Lakorn Lek, the Thai puppetry shows have been added to the theatre’s regular programme from July 2008 onwards. Aksra Theatre is situated on the 3rd Floor of the King Power Complex on Rangnam Road.

Aksra Hoon Lakorn Lek is performed by a budding new troupe of traditional Thai puppeteers that have learned the art of traditional Thai puppetry by Thailand’s legendary puppet master, Mr Sakorn Yangkhiawsod, one of Thai kingdom’s distinguished National Artist in the Performing Arts.

Aksra Hoon Lakorn Lek preserves the original form and style of the puppet play using finer and more complex techniques than most puppet dramas. Each puppet requires the synchronized efforts of three puppeteers who control the puppet’s spindle, arms and legs to produce highly animated and life-like movements. The synchronized gestures are gracefully performed.

Aksra has created more than 110 traditional Thai puppets for 10 different stories. The troupe has also created a spectacular show by incorporating short scenes from a selection of stories that are presented as a medley.

Elaborate scenes relate stories taken from the Ramakien epic, Japanese and Korean songs and lively Thai folk dance. The performance also features Wong Chongkraben, an orchestra consisting of traditional Thai musical instruments as well as universal ones.

In the realm of contemporary cultural performances, the dramatic theatrical scenes combined with stage techniques renders Aksra’s colourful and spectacular presentation of traditional Thai puppetry is outstanding and quite unique.
