As 2008 winds down to its final days, the economy remains a hot issue in the entertainment industry. As consumers have less expendable income, non-profit theaters like North Shore Music Theatre are feeling the pinch. NSMT needs to raise approximately $4 million in order to open for the next season of shows. Meanwhile, tattoo artist and television celebrity Kat Von D may have had to cancel her plans for a nationwide tour due to the recession, but her three-day Musink Tatto & Music Festival will live on for a second year in Costa Mesa, CA.
Country star Toby Keith will launch a winter 2009 leg for his current Biggest & Baddest Tour. Only a handful of dates have been announced, but a dozen are expected in total. The Reverend Horton Heat will begin a year of extensive touring early in 2009. More than 50 North American performances are booked for winter, spring and summer.

Gipsy Kings are looking fairly far ahead into the New Year, with 25 shows booked through September 2009. After December 30-31 concerts at Conga Room in Los Angeles, CA, the group will kick off their 2009 itinerary with a February 11 set at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, FL. Other currently confirmed dates include February 14-15 performances at Caesars in Atlantic City, NJ, a February 17 concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY, a February 20 gig at the new House of Blues in Boston, MA, a February 21 concert at Chicago Theatre in ChiCago, IL, September 10-11 sessions at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA, and September 18-19 shows at Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.
The Doobie Brothers have booked at least 15 concerts for the New Year, beginning with a New Year's Day performance at Dolphins Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, and currently concluding with a July 25 set at Harris Park in London, ON. Other concerts include February 13-14 shows at the Hilton Theatre in Las Vegas, NV, an April 1 gig at Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, WI, an April 23 session at Palace Theatre in Albany, NY, an April 25 performance at Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, NY, and an April 28 concert at The Klein in Bridgeport, CT. The classic rock band has also recently been announced as a performer at the 2009 NAIAS's annual black-tie Charity Preview, which will take place January 16 at Cobo Arena in Detroit, MI.
REO Speedwagon will hit the road for nearly 10 concerts within the first few months of the New Year. The first date on the books is a January 21 concert at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, NY, with more performances following through an April 25 set at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. Other confirmed gigs for winter and spring include a January 23 session at Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, a March 27 show at Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee, WI, an April 3 stop at American Music Theatre in Lancaster, PA, and an April 4 show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NY.
Cat Power (stage name for singer-songwriter Chan Marshall) has three concerts on the books for early February. The brief East Coast outing begins with a two-night stand at the Apollo Theatrer in New York City, with shows on February 6 and 7. From there, Cat Power will head down to Washington, DC, for a February 8 gig at the 9:30 Club.
Olivia Newton-John will embark on a winter 2009 tour of the U.S. Nine dates have been confirmed so far, but venues have only been announced for three. The tour is currently slated to kick off February 26 in Nashville, TN, and wrap March 10 in Atlanta, GA. Venues are confirmed for the February 28 gig at Sams Town Casino in Robinsonville, MS, the March 2 set at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL, and the March 7 performance at North Charleston Performing Arts Center in North Charleston, SC. More dates and information are expected in the coming weeks.
